SPHINX Challenge: Catch the Flag!
December 2021

The SPHINX Challenge: Catch the Flag! was organised on December 2nd 2021, gathering the SPHINX technical partners and pilot sites. Coordinated by SIMAVI, leader of the training activities, and by PDMFC, technical leader of the SPHINX Project, the session counted on the contribution of EDGE and all the technical partners and its primary objective was to ensure that users would learn about the SPHINX System in an interactive and engaging way.
In order to ensure high interactivity between the users and the SPHINX tools, the session was conducted as a Catch The Flag! event, using the CTFtime online platform for cybersecurity competitions. The experimentation activity was therefore organised as a training session, in which the pilot site partners had the opportunity to use and test the different components of the SHAPES system, namely the Interactive Dashboard, the Data Traffic Monitoring and the Vulnerability Assessment as a Service.
The initial mission, Detection, enabled the participants to use the Interactive Dashboard and the Data Traffic Monitoring tools to solve the task at hand, using filtering functions to find the keywords “signature”, “IP” and “severity level”. Another mission, Vulnerabilities, had the participants use the Interactive Dashboard, the Data Traffic Monitoring and the Vulnerability Assessment as a Service to filter vulnerabilities using IP or the CVSS score. At the end of the training event, all participants received access to the SPHINX CTF Platform to replay the missions and to deepen their know-how about the SPHINX Toolkit.
