Significant advances in emergency response may be achieved through the integration of telematics and smart devices, capable of improving the level of situational awareness of both emergency services and citizens.
This is the focus of the article presented at the 1st International Workshop on Interoperability, Integration and Interconnection of Internet of Things Systems (I4T), held on April 4th in Berlin, Germany. The article presents the exploratory developments that the NEXES project has produced with respect to the installation of smoke and gas sensors that are capable of automatically activating a 112 call in case of need, as well as the application of medical monitoring devices for emergency detection purposes, including the automated alerting of emergency services when patients present abnormal vital signs.
Automated emergency calls are deemed to deliver significant time savings in the overall emergency response effort, while at the same time guaranteeing for the involved emergency teams unprecedented emergency information that facilitates the selection of the most suitable assets to ensure that the response effort is highly effective and efficient.
